WORKING WONDERS FOR IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES...

Mark, 34, lives in a rural refugee camp in Ghana after surviving the genocide in Rwanda.. He fled following a series of threats on his life. The refugee camp is isolated, with few job opportunities and little food support, financial or logistic assistance available. With the help of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, he completed training courses in security guarding and first aid and now volunteers in the camp. He has also been learning English and wrote this letter: “I am ready to work in a restaurant or bar; in a store or factory; agriculture or construction. I can do cleaning, washing clothes and cars. I am not a lazy man. I can use my strength to do any work. I want to have friends to talk to. I want to go to church to meet friends; and to overcome cultural barriers.”

In 2011, ShareLife agencies assisted almost 40,000 newly arrived people in the GTA become productive and self-sufficient, through settlement programs.

The way Catholics celebrate the Eucharist follows a standard form. We call this the Order of the Mass. It is comprised of 4 main parts: The Introductory Rites, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and the Concluding Rites. Our worship is one great dialogue, namely, that God speaks to us, and we speak to God. This is reflected in the many prayers and responses spoken by the priest and the people. Our prayers are not spontaneous, but have been given to us from many sources through the generations. They are collected together in the Sacramentary or Roman Missal. Each prayer text conveys aspects of the great mystery of faith that we celebrate.
In 2000, Blessed John Paul II issued a 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal based on the renewal of the sacred liturgy called for by the bishops during the Second Vatican Council. Originally produced in Latin, the texts have been translated into English using a careful method to preserve, as much as possible, the full meaning of the text. On the first Sunday of Advent 2011, we will begin to use this new translation of the Roman Missal.
The prayers and acclamations will sound different from the ones we now employ. Therefore, we will need to learn the revised translations of the parts of the Mass. In September, we will begin to introduce these new translations. Further reflections on the parts of the Mass and the meaning of the texts will occur from January to June 2012. For more information please go to: www.archtoronto.org/romanmissal. (Posted: June 03, 2011)

Mary, the Mother of Christ, is the Mother and Model of the Church. She is the faithful disciple who opened her heart to welcome the Word (Luke 1:29). In her, the Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). Mary is the bearer of Christ to the world, teaching us to "do what he tells us" (John 2:5). She is the one who remained faithful to God's will and stood beneath the Cross trusting and loving, and welcoming all into her heart as her children: "Woman, behold your son" (John 19:26). Mary is the one around whom the early community gathered, awaiting the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:14). She continues to be for us a light on the path to the Kingdom, a companion in the journey of faith.

Prayer to Mother Mary

St. Joseph, the "just man" of Nazareth (Matthew 1:19) was chosen by God to be the guardian and protector of the Holy Family. He responded with trust and love to all that was asked of him: in taking Mary as his wife (Mt 1:21), in fleeing away from the danger which the newborn Son of God faced (Mt 2:13) and in providing for Mary and Jesus a home in which the Child could grow in age and wisdom (Luke 2:52). St. Joseph is the guardian of the Universal Church. He is the patron of Canada and of the Christian family. To his intercession we entrust our country, our home, our work, and the last hours of our earthly journey.

Prayer to St. Joseph

St. Michael, prince of the Heavenly Host, is the patron of the Archdiocese of Toronto. We turn to his intercession in our struggle against the adversities of life. We entrust to his care and protection the journey which we have been called to undertake in our vocation of life, work and commitment in building a just society of love and peace.
St. Michael, prince of the Heavenly Host, is the patron of the Archdiocese of Toronto.
Prayer to St. Michael
